Generosity: Give Like God Wants

Lately God has been working on me to become more generous. I always thought that I was generous but what I came to realize is that I was not, at least not how God would have me to be. See, I was more than happy to be generous when it was on my terms and in my comfort zone. I believed that this was normal and an okay way to be generous because let’s face it, no one likes to be out of their comfort zone so therefore many people stay there and don’t branch out. One of the sermons I heard at church right around Christmas really hit home for me and made me realize that I had the wrong idea about generosity. The sermon was about how whatever you keep is all that you will have, but whatever you give, God will multiply. This was not just about giving financially, nor was it about giving only to the church. It was about giving of your time, resources, and giving of whatever God calls of you. The guest preacher who spoke talked about how everything he has was God’s, he would give any and all away if that was what God called him to do. He also made it very clear that he was not about giving so that you can get. That is not what it is about, we give because that is what God calls us to do, we give so that God can bless others with our gift. When you give, God also blesses you in return. The most joyful people I know are the ones who truly give how God intended, God is blessing them for their generous heart! After hearing this it made me realize that I was giving with the wrong mindset. I was only giving what I thought I could give and not what God wanted me to give. Its a hard realization to come to, its never easy to realize an area that you have struggled with, especially if you didn’t even know about it. Since then I have completed a reading plan on youversion about generosity. The verses are to inspire us to give based on the way God has so graciously given. I pray that everyday God opens doors for me to be generous beyond my comfort zone!

“One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:24-25 (NIV)

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.” 2 Corinthians 6:9 (NIV)

Worship Song Friday: True Love by Phil Wickham

True Love by Phil Wickham

Come close listen to the story
about a love more faithful than the morning
The Father gave his only Son just to save us

The earth was shaking in the dark
All creation felt the Fathers broken heart
tears were filling heaven’s eyes
The day that true love died, the day that true love died
When blood and water hit the ground
Walls we couldn’t move came crashing down
We were free and made alive
The day that true love died, The day that true love died

I absolutely love this song! Every time I hear this song it brings me to tears. The very beginning when he says to “come close listen to the story” makes me realize what an amazing love story Christ has for us! God sent His only Son to die for us, how powerful a love He has for us! Our relationship with Him is truly a love story. Close your eyes and really listen to the lyrics of this song and what a worship experience it will be realizing the love story we have!

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (NIV)

“My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you— I whom you have delivered.” Psalm 71:23 (NIV)

God Will Provide an Open Door

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.”   Helen Keller

Not every thing that happens in life is something that we want or plan for. In fact there are many times that we might have plans for something and God closes the door. Helen Keller’s quote is truly a reality for many of us. When the door closes on an opportunity or plan we were hoping for, how often do we focus on that door? How long do we keep thinking about what could have happened or could have been instead of searching for the door that God does want to open for us? God has a plan for all our lives. Every door of opportunity that presents itself during our lives is planned by God, He provides for our every need. He knows what is best for us. Why do we tend to focus on what doesn’t work out according to our plans instead of what will happen according to His plans? Why do we seem to forget that God will provide an open door? Whenever a door closes there is always another door waiting to be opened, one that will take us on God’s path for our lives. Instead of focusing on the closed doors in our lives lets focus on the doors that are yet to be opened!

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Blessed Beyond Measure

What does it mean to be blessed? Dictionary.com defines blessed as to be divinely or supremely favored; fortunate. So what exactly does this look like in a day to day setting? I believe it means that we have been given a blessed life by God. Look around at what God has given you. Our homes, families, and friends are just a mere glimpse at the blessings that God has given us. I believe that being a mom is a huge blessing in and of itself. Being able to watch my child grow and become the person God has called him to be is so important to me; and will always treasure every minute. The life that God has given to each of us is filled with so many blessings we truly would not be able to number them all. Sometimes when life hits us hard it is difficult to notice and appreciate the blessings that we do have. When life is rough sometimes all that we see is everything that is going wrong in our world. Even in those times of trouble we are looked upon with love and grace by God, and there are still blessings amongst the trials we are facing. We need to remember that no matter what life serves us our God loves us. Because He loves us we are fortunate to be divinely blessed by Him. Look at your life today, what has God blessed you with?

“From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.” John 1:16 (NIV)

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” Ephesians 1:3 (NIV)

Raising Children: Reading the Bible

Something that I started during my pregnancy was reading my daily Bible verses aloud. I felt that if my son was able to hear me and recognize my voice after birth then what better thing for him to hear than God’s word! Every night I sat down and read my verses for the evening out loud. Now I spend his morning bottle reading a few Bible verses out loud while he eats. I truly believe that this is one of the best things that I could do for my son. God’s word is our source for everything, it is our map for this journey. What better way to raise up a child than by them growing up with the word of God being poured into their daily lives? If babies are able to start learning “who their parents are” and what “no” means at a young age then they should also be able to learn the value and importance of the Bible! I treasure those morning bottles where it is spent quietly reading scripture to my son while he soaks it all in. There are so many things in life that we will teach our children, but the most important thing we will ever teach them will be about their walk with Christ!

“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Luke 12:34 (NIV)
