I No Like It!

Isn’t it amazing the silly things you do once you are a parent?

Let me take you into my world during last night’s dinner. I promise this is 100% a true story!

As I am cooking dinner Chase and Eli were in the living room playing. I was pretty sure that it was not going to be an easy dinner as the two vegetables on our plates were Brussels sprouts and butternut squash. We have been trying to incorporate new vegetables into our diets. Usually I am very intentional about cooking only one “odd” veggie and throwing in the comfort of green beans, mashed potatoes or corn as the complementary side in hopes to make it a little less scary to a toddler. Speaking of that.. why is trying new foods such a big deal anyway?

Well this time I knew that with family coming in town this weekend there was a good chance we would not cook either veggies before they went bad. And I was NOT going to waste our money by letting that happen!

Needless to say we had two new veggies on our plates last night.

Eli was less than impressed! 

I remember when he was a baby he LOVED butternut squash! It was on his top list of favorites, right next to avocado! Well I don’t know if his taste buds have changed or just the stubborn two-year old thing has kicked in, but he does not care for it now!

We decided to make a house rule: You don’t have to like the food, but you do have to try it first before you decide. 

My hope is that if he tries it enough maybe one day he will like it. I mean it worked with Chase, now he enjoys a lot of veggies he hated growing up. I just want to make sure that my children try new things and appreciate what is given to them. You simply can’t say that you don’t like food until you have tasted it. You might be missing out on something awesome! Yes, I am well aware that my child is only a toddler, but we are setting the tone for the years to come!

So we sat down to dinner. Chase and I were enjoying our dinner, Eli wouldn’t touch his food. And then it happened…

“I know it’s new, and you’ve never tasted it.
You’ll just have to trust in me.
Just give it a try.

Try it. You’ll like it.
Try it. You’ll like it.
Try it. You’ll like it.
Try it. You’re gonna like it.”

That’s right people, Chase and I started singing Yo Gabba Gabba in hopes that Eli would try his new veggies. Oh, that was probably a sight to see! The toddler refusing to eat his veggies and two adults singing at the table. Yes, this did happen! Unfortunately it didn’t really work, he still decided after licking each one that “I no like it But you know what, that’s okay. It’s one meal, one new veggie at a time!

I can not believe that Christmas is Sunday! That got here so fast. Christmas time is where a lot of family traditions are carried out. For example, a big Christmas dinner, wrapping the gifts, making special Christmas shopping trips as a family and much more. What I didn’t realize was just how much some of our traditions impact the world around us. Think about all the special shopping trips we make instead of doing it at once, wasted food, and the trash from our gifts (packaging and gift wrap). It all adds up and it’s crazy just how much it increases just Thanksgiving to Christmas, 25% more waste! There is no need to stress or turn your back on any family traditions. I know a big concern for me as a mom is making sure that my son gets the right nutrition he needs. I have been lucky so far, Eli loves vegetables more than any other food! Seriously! He will eat veggies over fruit any day. I know that is rare and I am so thankful that getting him to eat his veggies is not a difficult task in our house. But, for those who have veggie hating kiddos, don’t give up! I have a lot of friends whose children have learned to love their veggies the more times they get them to try it. There was also a little secret that I learned from a few friends and that is masking the veggies. If they can’t see them then they wont know they are there, right? It’s true! That is one reason why I loved the quote from above, it made me laugh because it is true. Even though Eli loves his veggies we have still made some meals with a certain veggie in it and he ate it as if it wasn’t any different. The same is also true for my husband. He was never really a big vegetable eater growing up, he liked corn and green beans. After becoming vegetarians he didn’t have a choice, he couldn’t just live off of those two vegetables for the rest of his life. He has actually learned to love all kinds of vegetables that he never thought he would have. Most the time now when I make a meal he doesn’t ask what it is until after he has eaten it and decides if he likes it, then he asks what it was. So far, it has worked great!

Two meals I can think of in particular are homemade “meatloaf” and sweet potato pancakes. The meatloaf was a bean,rice and carrot meal that was shaped and tasted like a real meatloaf. Sweet potato pancakes are just that, sweet! Just add one mashed sweet potato and a teaspoon of nutmeg to your pancake batter, it’s as easy as that! Eli loved both meals and so did my husband! When we ate these two different meals they had seconds both times. I know that I don’t have experience yet with an older child refusing to eat something, but it never hurts to share ideas. When I hear of a good idea I love just passing it along to more moms, after all we are supposed to be supporting each other! One day I might have to be asking for more tips for picky eaters but either way, my friends will be there to give me tips that have worked for them!

 

Purpose: Having It All

We all want to be supermom. For some that might be staying home and for others it might be working out of the home. Either way we have lots to juggle to make sure that our day-to-day lives run smoothly. This video is of Christine Caine, founder and director of the A21 campaign, where she is talking about women wanting it all and how we do that successfully as Christian women.

 

Today’s post features a guest blog, Abbi Meadows. She is a blogger and owner of BodSchool. It is always nice hearing stories from moms who are going through what you are going through or have been down that path before. From the moment a woman finds out she’s pregnant, she’s bombarded with decisions: Midwife or OB? Natural or epidural? Find out the gender or be surprised?

These questions are just a foreshadowing of the myriad questions a parent is faced with after Baby arrives: Cloth diapers or disposables? Bassinet, crib, or co-sleeper? Breastfed or formula? Should we ‘schedule’ Baby’s day? What do we call the grandparents? How are we going to discipline? Who do we trust to babysit?

I researched and read up on pregnancy as if it were my full-time job. I checked out library books by the dozen. I could quote the “Business of Being Born;” I knew statistics and the reasons I wanted to have a drug-free, natural birth; I adapted my workout regimen so I could keep exercising. By my second trimester, I felt like a pregnancy guru!

During my third trimester, I switched the focus of my reading to child-rearing books. And while knowledge is so important, researching cannot ever totally prepare you for actually BEING a parent. I realized this when my son, Beau, reached six months old– the magical age when babies are ‘approved’ to start solid foods.

In my maternal excitement, I gathered spoons and cute bibs and bowls and got ready to introduce my guy to the joy of mushed bananas! I even had a recipe book, tools, and plans to make all of his food myself. And then? He adamantly refused to be spoon-fed. WHAT?! All the books say he’s the right age! I spent time mashing up all this food! Is something wrong? Why doesn’t he like it?! What do I do now?

Luckily, I have many wise friends who have walked before me on the Mother road. One told me about “Baby-Led Weaning” and I found this book, and this site, Baby-Led Weaning Blog, and I just knew this approach would fit Beau perfectly.

Baby-Led Weaning (BLW) isn’t very mainstream, and because of that, it’s often misunderstood. Even I had my reservations about trying it out, and I was desperate. Rapley’s book explains the principles behind the method in such a way that my world was rocked! I originally thought there was only one way–the Gerber way…You mean not everyone feeds their babies the same things at the same age in the same way?! Whoa!

So we switched our method.

In following the BLW approach, so much has changed as a result. My son is an adventurous eater. There isn’t a power struggle to get him to take “one more bite.” My husband and I eat even better because we don’t want to be hypocrites and eat foods we won’t allow Beau to eat. I only have to prep one meal at each mealtime. Less food is wasted. Beau’s meals come from whole foods and fresh produce, not boxes and jars. When we travel, we don’t have to pack special baby food. Beau is learning independence, hand-eye coordination, textures, colors, and flavors…and Mama is learning a lot, too. There are many, many more benefits to BLW, but you’ll just have to read the book. 😉

As parents, it’s our job to be the expert on WHO our baby is. Whether it’s feeding or sleeping or daily routines, sometimes the “normal” way of doing things doesn’t work for our particular child(ren) and as the parents, we have to find a solution that does work. This is where all that research comes in handy!
