The Artist Within

An artist in all of us

I am not an artist.

I hate when people say this!

Yes, I have said this statement many times.

Why do we feel like art is strictly sketching, painting and sculpting? If that is the case then yes, I am not an artist. My abilities are limited to bubble letters, flowers and hearts. In this scenario I have not one artistic bone in my body.

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

Pablo Picasso

Think about it. Every child gives the world’s largest grin as they proudly show off their scribbles. Isn’t this a masterpiece? Yes! I firmly believe that it is. I don’t believe that it’s the actual drawing that makes it “art” but simply the imagination that it took to create it. That my friends is what I believe is the root behind being an artist. You don’t have to draw amazing portraits or paint like a pro to have the imagination to create something spectacular! It merely needs to be thought up and put into being.

Think outside the box. Making a garden, baking, making up bedtime stories, picking out your clothes for the day, creating music, poetry, scrapbooks, decorating cakes, cutting hair and even blogging is coming from someone’s imagination. So is it art? Yes! It most definitely is! I am tired of using the phrase I am not an artist! I am going to raise my children to never believe in that statement. Children probably do not remain artist merely because of believing this terrible phrase so many of us have uttered, Building a castle from legos- art. Creating an intricate train track- art. Building a fort- art. Whatever you can think, you can create and that makes an artist! Let’s stop believing in the lie and start creating! I did, just now with this post!

“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination.”

Albert Einstein

It has been a busy past few weeks. We have had family in town, my brother-in-law got married, and I started a new job. So it has been an exciting time for our family but definitely busy. Things are beginning to get to normal at our house and that is what brings me to this weeks Thankful Thursday…. I am thankful for family time!

The older Eli gets the more fun he is having with our family time. Just a few days ago we spent an evening on the back porch playing in the water. All we did was fill up a pot of water and he went to town splashing us, the dogs and himself. It was so fun seeing his excitement. Kids grow up fast, that is just the way that it is. The older the kids get the busier life seems to be, especially with school and sporting events. Right now we might think life is busy but I am sure that families who have older children will tell me that its only just beginning. One day we will have more on our schedules to work around when it comes to getting that quality family time. I just want to make sure that I treasure all of our time together, big or small…. outings to the zoo or simply watching a movie at home, every moment is a memory we are making! So I am taking today to remind myself how thankful I am for our precious family time!

“And thank you for a house full of people I love.  Amen.”  Terri Guillemets

Today is thankful Thursday! After a busy last few days my one thing to share that I am thankful for is family dinners. I love sitting down with my family enjoying a good meal, talking and laughing. Before we had kids we were very bad about sitting at the table, actually we ate in front of the tv more often than we ate at the table. Once we had our son we decided to be more intentional and make dinner a time where we are together at the table with no tv to distract us. We have actually just started a new thing where we turn our phones to silent when we sit down for dinner and they stay on silent until our son goes to bed, distraction free family time. So no matter how busy and crazy the day can be I look forward to our family dinner time. What are you thankful for on this Thursday?

“God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.” 1 Corinthians 12:6 (NLT)

Today was one of those days where nothing seemed to go my way. First off I have been waiting for a phone call from a doctor that I was referred to so that I can make an appointment, well they called and I got to make my appointment…. for four months from now. That’s right you read that correctly, FOUR months! That really frustrated me and it was at the beginning of my day. When I tried to see about getting put on a cancellation list in hopes of possibly having the chance of getting an appointment sooner they proceeded to tell me that they do not have one of those lists and to just call and check in with them. Lovely, I guess I get to just call daily and ask about any cancellations.

Then, while Eli was taking his nap I got on the computer to do some work and guess what… the software I needed to use wasn’t on the computer and I thought it was. It felt like the sarcastic little cherry on top of that frustrating ice cream sundae which felt like my day. My husband assured me that this evening he would be able to put the program onto the computer which is great, it just was not what I wanted to deal with at the moment.

While these two events were not the only part of my day they were still big issues that happened that really frustrated and discouraged me. I have to just remind myself that God is in control! No matter how frustrated I get or don’t understand, He sees the big picture and everything will work out according to His awesome plan! And for those that were wondering my day did eventually get better.

Lately Eli has really started to like Yo Gabba Gabba. It’s the one show that he will actually watch. We don’t turn it on very often, but when we do he loves it. I don’t mind when we turn it on either because he is usually cuddled up next to me watching it, I love those precious moments!

Last night I woke up in the middle of the night with a song from Yo Gabba Gabba stuck in my head. Yesterday the episode that we watch they sang the song “Don’t say mean things to your friends.” And what did I wake up singing? That very song, yup I’m telling the truth. Any time that I tried to stop singing it I would only stop for a few seconds before the song would start back up again. Other parents will hopefully be able to appreciate this because I am sure that they have gotten songs from their kids favorite shows stuck in their heads. One of the fun things about parenting no one tells you, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I actually ended up smiling last night the longer the songs was stuck in my head. All it did was just make me think of sitting next to my sweet little boy watching a show that he loves. Again precious moments that I love! It will be fun to see what other kinds of kid songs will get stuck in my head through the years. What songs do you find yourself singing?
