Archives For passion

20111003-150842.jpgPurses, handbags, wallets and even diaper bags are items that moms find themselves carrying around on a regular basis. When you pick out your purse or any of the other similar items I just mentioned you are probably looking for a few things. Of course you want it to be practical and have features you like such as zipper, snap, buttons or any combination. But, a big reason is obviously if we like it or not… do we think its cute, stylish and so on. Did you ever think that when picking out one of these items you would have to consider if it is toxic or not? I never thought about whether my purse was toxic until now. The purses, handbags, wallets and even diaper bags that we carry on a daily basis are now beginning to be tested for traces of lead. Lead! Isn’t that only supposed to be an issue with paint? That’s what I thought. But no, now we have to be concerned about the everyday item we have on our shoulders! I have written a post about this issue for Green Oklahoma, Toxic Purses. Check it out, you might be surprised!

The idea of “going green” is a big task and a little overwhelming. But, it is something that I am passionate about. One thing in particular that I am passionate about is helping people realize that the most simple changes made make a big difference in the long run. You don’t have to drive an expensive eco-friendly car or have a new expensive house built that is more eco-friendly to help the environment. While those things make a difference they are not the only way. Taking the transition one step at a time and starting off with the things that we do immediately make just as much a difference for our own health and the Earth. For example, washing clothes in cold water cycles reduces the amount of energy we use and still gets the clothes clean, plus saving money on our bills. There are tons of simple and easy things that we can do take make a difference without turning our lives upside down over night… its one step at a time. I have written an article as a guest blogger for Green Oklahoma on Tips for Transitioning to a Green Life, check it out!

“The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you!” Psalm 32:8 (NLT)

Direction. Sometimes it is hard to find. Especially when it feels like God is telling you to do something but you are unsure about what exactly it is. Not to mention all the times we doubt ourselves, our abilities and even doubt whether it is truly God speaking to us or just ourselves coming up with stuff. The ladies event at church last week touched on this topic and then the sermon this weekend did as well. It definitely felt like I was being talked directly to. I know I am not the only one who knows what that feels like! Lately I have felt like God is speaking to me, calling me to do something, yet I don’t exactly know what He wants me to do. I know that He me wants to do something with my passion for green and eco-friendly living. I just have no idea what that looks like. It can be so incredibly frustrating when you know there is something God is calling you to do but the vision is not clear. I know that it requires faith and persistence on my end to continually seek Him until He reveals it to me. It’s just hard sometimes. The verse above was sent to me from a friend the other day, and I really needed it. I love when God gives our friends a message for us that we need at just the right moment! For whatever reason I don’t have that clear vision just yet, however He does. He already knows that path and plan, I just need to have faith in that and seek Him daily. He will guide me!

“Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion.” Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Today I wanted to take the time to share some information that many of us are unaware of. I know I was until a few days ago. Cosmetics… this does not mean just make up. Cosmetics are considered anything we put on-soap, hair care, nail polish and the obvious make up… so men and babies use these products too. The cosmetic industry actually has no regulations for what is considered safe and they do not have to recall anything that is harmful. This is crazy! As you know I am pretty passionate about making green changes, so of course this issue really bothers me. I believe that we are all given our passions for a reason and are meant to do something about them. I wanted to share this with you all today to spark some interest in some of you. Change must start somewhere.

If you want to check your products and make sure they are safe you can go to the Skin Deep Database and find all the information there. You can also find more information about the chemicals in our products from Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families and the Compact for Safe Cosmetics.

We all have something that drives our passion and we seek change, you know one of mine. What is yours?

“One person with passion is better than forty people merely interested.” E.M. Forster

We all have passions. We may have more than one, but all of them are unique to us. We do not have to share the same passion as the next person. Because we all have different interests it makes our ability to make change in the world all the greater because every one has certain things they truly are passionate about and are willing to share that with others. There are many things I am passionate about… God, my family, being a mom, living a more green and healthy lifestyle, writing as well as other things. Today I wanted to share with you the top 10 things that I have done about my passion for living a green and healthy lifestyle. When you are passionate about something you can’t just sit back and do nothing, it always inspires change in you. Maybe my passion might spark an interest in one of you…

Top 10 Green/Healthy Changes I have made

  1. Cloth Diapers
  2. Making my own cleaning supplies
  3. Avoiding hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup
  4. The seldom times I use plastic I makes sure its BPA free
  5. Line drying my clothes and diapers
  6. Green and biodegradable laundry detergent
  7. All natural bath soaps
  8. All natural wash out bar soap for stains on clothes
  9. More home made foods and desserts
  10. Homemade baby food

There are many reasons why I have made these changes. Most of the reasons I have are because of the chemicals in the commercial products and what they do to our bodies. I understand not everyone shares in my passion for this, but that is all in what makes us unique. All I want to do is share something I am passionate about and hope to inspire some of you. What are you passionate about and how has it inspired you to change?
