What Passion Can Do

November 29, 2011 — Leave a comment

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:11 (NIV)

Growing up in my youth group I remember learning this verse and hearing sermons about it. Our youth leaders would always remind us that just because we were teenagers did not mean that we couldn’t make a lasting impact, and so this verse was given to us often. Now, when I look at my son and think about his future, this verse comes to mind. I have prayed since the day I found out I was pregnant that he would be a world changer. I pray that he will follow God’s plan for his life and make a difference in the lives of others. What better verse to go with that prayer than this one? I remember just from when I was young being so passionate and wanting to see change but fearing what others would say or think. If only I would have put this verse to use more often maybe I wouldn’t have been so afraid. I knew the verse, but I don’t think that I truly tried to grasp it and live by it, because lets face it… I was young, and young people can’t make a difference, or that is how it feels. I want all my children to know that they do not have to be a grow adult to make a difference and to see change happen. If they are passionate about what they want to see changed then they can do more good than an adult who has no passion! Our children are the future, they must believe in themselves and believe that they can make a difference.

The idea of “going green” is a big task and a little overwhelming. But, it is something that I am passionate about. One thing in particular that I am passionate about is helping people realize that the most simple changes made make a big difference in the long run. You don’t have to drive an expensive eco-friendly car or have a new expensive house built that is more eco-friendly to help the environment. While those things make a difference they are not the only way. Taking the transition one step at a time and starting off with the things that we do immediately make just as much a difference for our own health and the Earth. For example, washing clothes in cold water cycles reduces the amount of energy we use and still gets the clothes clean, plus saving money on our bills. There are tons of simple and easy things that we can do take make a difference without turning our lives upside down over night… its one step at a time. I have written an article as a guest blogger for Green Oklahoma on Tips for Transitioning to a Green Life, check it out!

“One person with passion is better than forty people merely interested.” E.M. Forster

We all have passions. We may have more than one, but all of them are unique to us. We do not have to share the same passion as the next person. Because we all have different interests it makes our ability to make change in the world all the greater because every one has certain things they truly are passionate about and are willing to share that with others. There are many things I am passionate about… God, my family, being a mom, living a more green and healthy lifestyle, writing as well as other things. Today I wanted to share with you the top 10 things that I have done about my passion for living a green and healthy lifestyle. When you are passionate about something you can’t just sit back and do nothing, it always inspires change in you. Maybe my passion might spark an interest in one of you…

Top 10 Green/Healthy Changes I have made

  1. Cloth Diapers
  2. Making my own cleaning supplies
  3. Avoiding hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup
  4. The seldom times I use plastic I makes sure its BPA free
  5. Line drying my clothes and diapers
  6. Green and biodegradable laundry detergent
  7. All natural bath soaps
  8. All natural wash out bar soap for stains on clothes
  9. More home made foods and desserts
  10. Homemade baby food

There are many reasons why I have made these changes. Most of the reasons I have are because of the chemicals in the commercial products and what they do to our bodies. I understand not everyone shares in my passion for this, but that is all in what makes us unique. All I want to do is share something I am passionate about and hope to inspire some of you. What are you passionate about and how has it inspired you to change?

Provision: Waiting

“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:14 (NIV)

Today I was out running some errands with my mom. We were talking about last year. My brother was out of work for a while and during that time God brought my mom to this verse in Psalm to share with him. The waiting game was longer than we had hoped, but God provided the place for him to be at and it has been a blessing. Now, my mom finds herself holding fast to this verse since my dad is now with out work. She told me today that all the things she told my brother she is now telling herself and my dad. God’s timing is everything! My brother-in-law is faced with the job search now as well. It’s never easy hunting for a job and having to wait, apply, wait, apply and so on. Although His timing is perfect it is not our timing. I pray daily for both my dad and brother-in-law to not just find jobs, but to find jobs that they love, are passionate about and are called to do. I believe that God will provide!

A Life Of Passion

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 (NIV)

“One person with passion is better than forty people merely interested.” E. M. Forster

We all have certain things that we are really passionate about. I believe that living a life filled with passion is a great example for our children. What better way for them to see the benefits of passion than to see their parents following theirs? Our passions in life can be more than one thing and it could be a variety. I am not just talking about our Christian walks, which should be the top passion. But, I believe that it is good to have things that really get our heart stirring and we love doing. It could be volunteering with an organization that you really care about, singing, the arts, health and fitness, and much more. If we do not have passion in our life then how will we live the Christian walk with the passion that we should? God gave us all things that particularly mean something to each of us, we will not all be driven by the same thing and that’s okay, that is what makes us unique! I believe the reason we are all given something different to care about is because He gave us each something specific to make a difference in. I have just in the last year or so discovered a passion of mine and that is “going green.” Now there are a million different things that you can do to “go green” and I am not necessarily going to do every single thing. My biggest things that I have tried to avoid are chemicals, by products and fillers. I have done other things that are considered green but these have been my stepping-stones. I have loved the results of the change! So you may ask, what did I change? Well, I make my own cleaning products which is amazing because it avoids chemicals and will not harm animals or children. I use all natural laundry detergent and stain removers, my son wears Happy Heiny cloth diapers, and I am more meticulous when I shop trying to read the labels and avoid products that are not natural. I know that my decision for going green and the changes I have made are not for everyone, BUT… I want to encourage you to find your passion! What is it that really gets you excited? What could you talk about and not tire of? What do you want to see a change in? Answer these questions and you are bound to find something that could end up making an impact on you! I encourage you to find what you want to get excited about and show your children what a life of passion can truly do in the world!
